The Nurse Executive Board Certification (NE-BC®) is administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). It is designed for nurses in executive roles to validate their advanced knowledge and skills in leadership, quality and safety, human capital management, and healthcare delivery. The NE-BC® exam comprises 150 questions, of which 125 are scored and 25 are pretest questions. Candidates have 3 hours to complete the multiple-choice exam. The passing score is determined through a standard-setting process and is not publicly disclosed. The exam is computer-based.
To qualify for the NE-BC® exam, candidates must hold a current, active RN license and a bachelor's or higher degree in nursing. They should have at least 24 months of full-time equivalent experience in a mid-level administrative or higher position, a faculty position teaching graduate students executive-level nursing administration, or a nursing management or executive consultation role within the last five years. Additionally, they must complete 30 hours of continuing education in nursing administration within the last three years.
The exam costs $395 for non-members and $295 for American Nurses Association (ANA) members, inclusive of a $140 non-refundable administrative fee. Additional fees may apply for special services.
